THE CATHEDRAL CHURCH OF CHRIST THE KING, GRAFTON
PARISH COUNCIL
20 MARCH 2019
This Parish Council:
Expresses its compassionate solidarity with the Muslim community in Christchurch following the violent attack on their worship gathering on Friday, 15 March 2019;
Extends our greetings to the local Muslim community here in Grafton and the Clarence Valley, and assures them of our friendship and our concern for their well-being;
Urges the Clarence Valley Council to adopt the Compassionate Communities program (https://charterforcompassion.org/communities/overview) as a practical response to the need for reconciliation and harmony within our local community;
Recommends that advertising our commitment to be a compassionate and inclusive community is preferable to the erection of monuments to memorialise the tragic events in the mosques of Christchurch;
Welcomes the offer from St Paul’s Anglican Church, Burwood—in partnership with their local Muslim community— to bring members of their very diverse community, including members of the Muslim community, to Grafton as a way of expressing support for the community of Grafton.
Encourages the Dean to explore ways that members of the Muslim community of Grafton might be able to join us in agreed events as we seek to express our shared grief, highlight our shared humanity, demonstrate our shared love, and communicate our deep desire for peace and goodwill.
Offers the use of our facilities in the Parish Centre for local Muslims to gather for their Friday prayers and other special holy days as our honoured guests.
